02 — Compare

Should I optimize my website for Google and AI, or just list on Booking.com and Expedia?

Short answer Build your own website's visibility first. Use OTAs and social media to support it.

It isn't either-or. Travelers still use OTAs for ratings and price comparison, but they read OTA links in AI answers as ads, and AI told 71% of them to book direct.

03 — Q&A · Discover

Getting discovered

How travelers first find who to consider.

Question 1 · Discover

Which AI tools do travelers use to plan trips, and does Google still matter?

Short answer Travelers stick to one AI.

Most stay with the first tool they pick. ChatGPT leads, and two of the top three, Gemini and Google AI Mode, are Google's, so Google still matters.

47%ChatGPT
22%Gemini
20%Google AI Mode
11%Claude, Grok and Perplexity

The study

Travelers used the tool they already knew, and anyone who used a second had ChatGPT in the mix. Google's two tools made up 42% of use, and AI Mode looks like ordinary Google in analytics, so steady search numbers can hide a change in behaviour.

The Diani lens

You can't choose a visitor's tool, so be present in all three. Check what each says about you in your visitors' words, like "quiet beachfront hotel in Diani for couples".

What we do

  1. We test your business in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode every month and show you what each says.
  2. We check it the way your guests ask, from Kenya and from abroad.
  3. We build your Google ranking and AI visibility together, so neither is left behind.

Question 2 · Discover Tours & activities

I'm a local business. Is it worth investing in Google ranking and AI visibility?

Short answer Local beats big brand.

Yes. A named local business with a phone number reads as a real recommendation, while big travel brands in AI answers read as ads.

The study

A rule of thumb is forming: a famous travel brand in an AI answer must be an ad. One traveler left a major aggregator off his list for that reason alone. A named operator with contact details felt like the AI's own pick. Travelers still wanted both, the platform for ratings and the operator to book with.

The Diani lens

An owner-run business with a name and number looks more credible than an anonymous listing. It only works if the details match everywhere. If your phone number differs between Google, your website and social pages, AI may show your rating with no link to you.

Our results

Palm & Tide, a curated-experiences brand in Diani, saw a 19.5% rise in ChatGPT sessions after we built its authority as a local curator. Read the case study

What we do

  1. We position you as the local, named brand, with your founders, owners and guides in the story.
  2. We keep your name, address, phone and WhatsApp identical on every profile AI reads.
  3. We build the third-party authority that earns Google rankings and AI recommendations.

Question 3 · Discover

Do guests really trust AI recommendations compared with Google results?

Short answer Structure earns trust.

Yes: 70% trusted AI more than traditional search and 25% about the same. What builds the trust is structure, not the recommendation itself.

70%Trusted AI more than traditional search
25%Trusted it about the same
2 to 4Prompts in a typical session

The study

Travelers pointed to comparison tables, ranked lists with reasons, source links and follow-up questions far more than to the recommendation. Sessions were short, and sometimes the first list was the final shortlist.

The Diani lens

If a visitor sees one answer, your page has to explain itself: who it suits, why, how to get there from the airport, what's included, and how cancellation works.

Our results

For Zanzitan we built content matching how placement students phrase their questions to AI, and saw a 43% increase in AI-referred sessions. Read the case study

What we do

  1. We write pages that say why, with clear headings, comparison tables and sources.
  2. We answer the usual follow-up questions on the page itself.
  3. We structure the content so it can rank on Google and be lifted by AI.

03 — Q&A · Plan

Planning the trip

How a trip takes shape.

Question 4 · Plan Safaris & multi-day trips

Should I sell my tour as a day trip or a multi-day package?

Short answer Itineraries get self-planned.

Day trips are what AI recommends directly. Multi-day packages need extra work: break them into detailed days that AI can use when it builds a plan.

100%Of participants planned multi-day itineraries themselves instead of looking for an operator

The study

No participant considered a guided package. They never entered the conversation, because nobody asked for one. The AI builds the itinerary, so planning it yourself feels natural. Operators can still appear as sources if their content supplies the detail.

The Diani lens

For excursions like Shimba Hills, Wasini Island and the Kisite-Mpunguti dolphin trips, the sale may start as a plan a visitor builds with AI. The study doesn't say which format sells better, so offer both and publish each in full detail.

What we do

  1. We turn each trip into plain text: guides, sites, fees, pick-up points and what happens each day.
  2. We keep it current, so AI has no reason to invent details or skip you.
  3. We group activities by area, the way a good day plan would.

03 — Q&A · Evaluate

Getting chosen

How travelers decide who to trust.

Question 5 · Evaluate Hotels

What gets guests to choose my hotel over competitors on Google and AI?

Short answer Reviews and photos decide hotels.

Reviews first, photos second. Your own description carries little weight, and travelers' top complaint was too few of either.

#1 most clicked part of a listing: reviews
#2 most clicked: photos
#1 complaint: too few reviews or photos

The study

Travelers wanted more photos, not better ones. AI models leaned on reviews while people looked at photos, and in Google AI Mode the photos came from the hotel's Google listing, not its website. Travelers then checked both on outside sources.

The Diani lens

A polished website can't make up for a thin Google listing. Ask every guest for a review, answer them, and keep adding photos of rooms, the beach and the neighbourhood.

Our results

KweliAI, a new product with no domain authority, earned 355 Microsoft Copilot citations in three months by building credibility on outside platforms such as Dev.to, Medium, GitHub and Quora. Read the case study

What we do

  1. We set up steady review collection and help you respond.
  2. We help you build out your Google listing with more photos.
  3. We put you in the places travelers check, like forums and review sites.
  4. We publish current rates and seasonal offers as text on your site.

Question 6 · Evaluate

Should I pay for ads in ChatGPT, or stay with Google ads?

Short answer Irrelevant ads backfire.

Not yet for most businesses. Ads in AI answers are still rare, and an irrelevant one made travelers doubt the whole answer. Only advertise if the ad matches the exact question.

Most travelers saw no sponsored links all week.
Relevance, not disclosure, decided whether an ad helped or hurt.
One irrelevant ad made some travelers doubt the whole answer.

The study

This was the first year researchers could watch reactions to ads in AI tools. A discount on something a traveler was already considering was welcome. An unrelated placement broke the sense that the answer was independent, and some travelers prompted again.

The Diani lens

The more lasting move is to be the organic answer first. If you do advertise, whether on Google or in AI, match the offer to what the traveler actually asked.

What we do

  1. We build your organic visibility on Google and AI first.
  2. If you advertise, we help match each ad to the exact question and offer.
  3. We steer you away from generic placement that reads as an intrusion.

03 — Q&A · Book

Getting booked

Where the money changes hands.

Question 7 · Book Operators & hotels

Is AI visibility worth the investment on top of ranking on Google?

Short answer AI points travelers direct.

Yes, if you can take direct bookings. 71% of travelers were told by AI to book direct with the operator.

71%Were told by AI to book direct with the operator
68%Already preferred booking direct
80%In the 2025 study, which covered AI Mode only

The study

For the second year running, AI sent travelers to the operator rather than the middleman, now across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode. The researchers caution that 68% already preferred booking direct, so AI may partly be echoing that, and the study couldn't separate the two.

The Diani lens

Direct bookings keep the guest relationship with you and avoid platform commission. But AI can only point to a direct option if it exists and is easy to use. Make direct clearly better, with a rate or perk AI can quote.

Our results

After Palm & Tide's AI visibility campaign, sessions on its booking page spiked by 3,100%. Read the case study

What we do

  1. We claim and align every profile AI reads under one brand name.
  2. We make booking direct visibly better, with a rate or perk that can be quoted.
  3. We give guests a phone-friendly booking path of your own. See Safina MIS.

Question 8 · Book

Will guests let AI book their trip, or will they still come to my website?

Short answer Research is delegated. Payment isn't.

They still come to you. Travelers let AI research and shortlist but keep control of payment, and the handoff to booking sites often loses their dates.

4.1/5Trust in AI hotel recommendations after the task
63%Mostly or extremely trusted AI to assist
3 in 4Booking handoffs lost dates or guest counts, at minimum

The study

In more than 75% of attempts, trip details didn't arrive intact at the booking site. Travelers mostly blamed the hotel or platform, re-entered their details and still rated the recommendations highly. Many wouldn't let AI finish a booking even with a perfect handoff. The report adds that Google launched a version of agentic hotel booking at the end of September 2026.

The Diani lens

Checkout is where you win. A guest arriving from AI has largely decided, and a slow or manual payment step can lose them. Offer simple payment, show rates and cancellation terms as text, and test the path on a phone.

What we do

  1. We publish rates, cancellation terms and room details as text, not PDFs.
  2. We connect your website to booking and payment, with a short checkout.
  3. We test the handoff from each major AI tool on a phone and record what survives.
  4. We prepare your site for agentic booking, where clean text and current rates are what an agent reads.

05 — Limits & Sources

What this report is, and isn't.

It's our reading of someone else's study. The statistics come from Propellic with Touchstone Research: a week-long diary study (17 to 24 August 2026) in which 38 US travelers planned real trips on their own devices. We haven't independently verified their figures.

It's not a Diani study. The participants were American and the sample is small. Visitors to Diani, including Kenyans and international guests, may behave differently, especially on payment methods. Treat the Diani points as informed reasoning, not measured fact.

Our client results are single cases. They come from our own campaigns and aren't a guarantee of what you'll see.
